Over the past seventeen years the face of AIDS has changed from gay white males to poor inner city Blacks - Congressional black Caucus. There is a state of emergency regarding the AIDS crisis in the African American community. While representing approximately 12% of the total US population, African Americans make up almost 37% of all AIDS cases. Almost two thirds (62%) of all women reported with AIDS are African American. African American women are rapidly becoming the new face of AIDS. African American Women are the fastest growing HIV/AIDS population in America

A Report by the Alameda County Public Health Officer indicated that African Americans are five times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than are Whites or Latinos; African American women account for 62% of women diagnosed with AIDS; African American youth account for 40% of the youth diagnosed with AIDS; and African Americans account for 69% of pediatric AIDS cases.
